1,2,3 - come and sing!
123Sing Scarborough! is for people who just want to sing for fun! We'll be singing songs and great harmonies of all sorts from ABBA to The Beatles, from Mozart to Les Misérables! And more! Something for every taste, we hope!
There's no audition, and you don't need any singing experience. There'll be no pressure, and you won't have to read music!
Of course, if you are already an experienced singer, you'll be just as welcome!
The day
We're again using the great facilities of Westborough Methodist Church which can seat up to 400 people - it would be fantastic to fill it with singers again! We'll start the day at 10am and with breaks we'll go on till about 4pm. Most of the time we'll be learning songs by ear: no sheet music which is a huge relief to those of us who can't read music! Some songs we'll just sing together, some we'll learn to sing in parts - and no, honestly, it isn't that difficult if you've got a good teacher and we have: STAN KELL is the musical conductor of STAXTON SINGERS and he promises that we'll all enjoy the day!
You'll need to book your place because we need to have an idea of how many might be coming so we can arrange the seating, and let the catering staff of Westborough Church know how many teas and coffees they might be serving!) and you can download the booking form here. Fill it in, send it back to the address given (with a stamped self-addressed envelope, please!) and the ticket money - then turn up on the day and enjoy singing!
After the recent hugely successful day when over 400 singers gathered in Westborough Methodist Church to sing music by JOHN RUTTER under the direction of the composer himself, STAXTON SINGERS decided to join in with the '123 SING!' event described by the sponsor, ClassicFM, as 'the biggest celebration of singing the UK has ever seen!' All round the country over the weekend of 1-3 October groups will be getting together to celebrate the simple joy of singing together!
Our focus is on just singing for fun, so we're going to be learning songs by ear - just like singing along to a tune on the radio or music player! And if you think you can't sing - bet you've joined in singing 'Happy birthday!' Suzi Digby, a well known musician and conductor, says that it's actually a very difficult song to sing! Well, it might be: but we all do it, and we all enjoy it!
So don't let anything put you off - come and join us on 2 October and enjoy the great benefits of singing!
Afterwards...
If you find that you enjoy singing so much at the 123Sing Scarborough! event that you might want to try singing again, of course we'd love you to consider joining STAXTON SINGERS! But you might prefer a different style of singing, or you might not be free on Mondays, which is our usual choir practice night, in which case we'll have information about a variety of choirs in the area you can try.
